This blog is dedicated to the student resistance of an agreement currently being negotiated that would affiliate the Faculty of Information and Media Studies with CanWest, a corrupt Canadian media conglomerate.

New message board

In the interest of an open and neutral discussion on these issues, a message board has been created that all can begin posting on and discussing. This was not made because we at FreeMIT do not want opposing viewpoints (because we feel discussion is EXTREMELY important); however, as you can tell from the blog's description, this blog was created for students who oppose the agreement to get together and form a unifed front.

Although we will never censor/delete opposing viewpoints that are posted on the site, really, it is here for people to come and read about actions and resistance that is/will be happening to try and preserve what is left of our faculty's autonomy from corporate control.

Finally, blogs are just not a great place for discussion. They are really made for sender-receiver communication with the added feature of comments. As a result, the message board is far more conducive to a discussion of the issues.

I apologize for the drab/boring appearance of the message board in advance; it's pretty basic. The good news is it should load extremely fast as there are few graphics to be loaded.

Hi Jeff,
It may well be that some journalism students are opposed to the CanWest deal for the same ideological reasons that the MIT kids who've posted on your blog apparently espouse. However, it seems to me - and I am a journalism student, so you may see a bias here- that FIMS students who are not in the journalism program will be least affected by the deal either way. The flip side of this is that future journalism students at Western WILL be affected if the deal is kiboshed. But perhaps you could enlighten me as to the negative impact on you personally- or any other MIT, MPI, MLIS student for that matter- of FIMS accepting an endowment from CanWest. What exactly are you afraid of?
Secondly, your little photoshop job on the FIMS building is amusing, but just a tad histrionic, don't you think? I read over the points of the endowment and couldn't see anything in there to suggest CanWest will have a say in which student gets the entrance scholarship or who is chosen for the annual teaching position.
My experience of journalists- working or students- is that they don't like being told what to think. I would be surprised if this CanWest endowment had the flow on effect of transforming future graduates of Western's journalism program into Asper clones.
regards,
Matt

Quote from Hilda: "...hiding in a cozy academic den isn't a solution, it's a coping mechanism."

I should start by saying that I am an MLIS student at FIMS.

Your sentiment Hilda, which was reiterated yesterday many times by others in your program, disturbs me. I think that scholarships are important. I am just as poor as the next student struggling through their 2nd or 3rd degree, so I can identify with the journalism students who want/need a $2500 scholarship.

As to the question of whether or not turning down the deal will adversely affect journalism students' chances of being hired by CanWest papers...I believe Dr. Ross' comments put an end to that myth.

As to the solution you wanted Sheleena to propose, well, we tried to do just that yesterday. Citizens such as ourselves are not in a position to front a large-scale assault on a company such as CanWest. As you can imagine, we simply do not have the resources. What we CAN do is try to fight smaller battles like the decision to allow CanWest to fund a scholarship and research chair at UWO's FIMS. In doing so we exercise our rights as citizens in a democratic society to oppose what we deem to be socially negligent behaviour (recall Dr. Witheford's comments at the meeting).

In essence, your comment about our actions being a "coping mechanism" is partly true. We deal with the fact that CanWest is morally bankrupt by opposing them wherever we are allowed. I take no shame in identifying myself with that statement.

As to your comment about us hiding in a "...cozy academic den...", I have to disagree. How cozy do you think it was for Dr. Witheford to stand in front of all those people and say the things he did when he knew he would be attacked? Do you think that he felt cozy when he was accused of poisoning the faculty? It concerns me that so many of the journalism students voiced such a strong anti-intellectual sentiment, while veiling it under the cloak of being realistic or practical. The ivory tower that so many in the room yesterday seemed to disdain drives and sustains what is left of our rights and freedoms by voicing opinions without regard for the abuse it may take because of it.

If “living in the real world” is now being equated to “Shut up and don’t rock the boat, you’ll ruin it for others,” then I want none of it.
